A different bupropion XL 300 was also withdrawn with little fanfare from the FDA. In both the Wockhardt and Dr. Reddy’s recall of metoprolol the problem was dissolution. Over the last several years there have been a number of recalls of generic metoprolol. Although the FDA considers the Dr. Reddy’s recall important (Class II, which means “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences”) it is doing little to alert patients.

Side effects tend to be annoying, not life-threatening. Analyses of beta blockers by the independent Drug Effectiveness Review Project at Oregon Health & Science University and by Consumers Union, publishers of Consumer Reports, evaluated beta blockers for effectiveness, safety, and cost. It can also, though very rarely, trigger a heart attack, stroke, or erratic heart rhythm. Beta-1 receptors are found almost exclusively in heart cells. The combination of individual differences and medication differences means it can be a balancing act to find the drug and dosage that work best with the fewest side effects.
