The following are examples of typical tetracycline side effects: If you experience any of the following symptoms of a tetracycline allergy: hives, trouble breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, seek emergency medical attention. Call 1-800-FDA-1088 to contact FDA and report side effects. nausea, diarrhoea, upset stomach, appetite loss, white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips, swollen tongue, black or "hairy" tongue, difficulty swallowing, sores or swelling in your rectal or genital area, or vaginal itching or discharge. Any signs of a new infection, including a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; fever, chills, body aches, and flu-like symptoms; pale or yellowed skin; easy bruising or bleeding; and any flu-like symptoms.
Interactions
While some medications should never be combined, in other circumstances two different medications may be used together even if an interaction may happen. Given the potential for interactions, some medications shouldn't be taken at or close to mealtimes or when consuming specific foods. When taking your medication with food, alcohol, or tobacco, talk to your healthcare provider. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your healthcare professional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur.
Contraindications
Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, dietary supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking or plan to take. Be sure to mention any of the following: anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), and penicillin. be aware that antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, calcium, or sodium bicarbonate, calcium supplements, zinc products, iron products, and laxatives containing magnesium interfere with tetracycline, making it less effective. If you have an allergy to tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline, demeclocycline, any other medications, or any of the ingredients in tetracycline capsules, tell your doctor and pharmacist before taking tetracycline. Tetracycline can cause pregnancy, so call your doctor right away if it does. Tetracycline should be taken 2 hours before or 4 hours after iron supplements and iron-containing vitamins. Tetracycline should be taken 2 hours prior to or 6 hours following the use of antacids, calcium supplements, zinc products, and laxatives containing magnesium. Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney disease, lupus (a condition in which the immune system attacks numerous tissues and organs including the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys), or if you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Take tetracycline 2 hours before or after products containing zinc. Tell your doctor right away if you get a sunburn. you should know that when tetracycline is used during pregnancy or in babies or children up to age 8, it can cause the teeth to become permanently stained. Plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged sun exposure and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen while taking tetracycline. Tetracycline may make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Tetracycline shouldn't be administered to kids younger than 8 years old unless your doctor deems it necessary.
Relapsing fever: Treatment of relapsing fever due to Borrelia spp. Sexually transmitted diseases: Treatment of lymphogranuloma venereum or uncomplicated urethral, endocervical, or rectal infections caused by C. trachomatis; chancroid caused by Haemophilus ducreyi; granuloma inguinale (donovanosis) caused by Klebsiella granulomatis; syphilis caused by Treponema pallidum, when penicillin is contraindicated. Listeriosis: Treatment of listeriosis due to Listeria monocytogenes when penicillin is contraindicated. Skin and skin structure infections: Treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or S. pyogenes.

The physician must decide whether to recommend that a nursing mother discontinue nursing during treatment with tetracyclines or change to a different antibiotic. Doxycycline Tetracycline antibiotics, such as doxycycline, can have toxic effects on development of bone in the fetus. Therefore, tetracyclines are not recommended during pregnancy unless there is no other appropriate antibiotic. Are doxycycline and tetracycline safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding? Since tetracyclines can cause toxic effects on bone, the use of tetracyclines in nursing mothers is of concern.
