Description

Terazosin is an alpha-1-selective adrenergic blocker that is a quinazoline derivative.

Dosage

Carefully adhere to the instructions on the prescription label. Take terazosin exactly as prescribed. Terazosin can be taken once daily in doses ranging from 1 mg to 20 mg. Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose and gradually increase the dose as necessary.

Missed dose

If you have forgotten two or more doses, speak with your doctor. Never take two doses at once to make up for missed ones. Skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular dosing schedule, though, if it is almost time for the subsequent dose. As soon as you remember, take the missed dose.

Overdose

Call 911 right away if the victim has fallen, experienced a seizure, is having trouble breathing, or cannot be roused. In case of overdose, call the poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222. At https://www.poisonhelp.org/help, you can also find information online. Dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, blurred vision, and others are all possible overdose symptoms.

Storage

You shouldn't flush this medication down the toilet, though. Instead, the best way to dispose of your medication is through a medicine take-back program. All medications should be kept out of the sight and reach of children, as many containers (such as weekly pill containers and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for small children to open. Keep this medication tightly closed in its original container away from the reach of children. If you are unable to participate in a take-back program, visit the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for more details. Store it at room temperature, away from light, excessive heat, and moisture (not in the restroom), and at a consistent temperature. To find out about take-back programs in your neighborhood, speak with your pharmacist or get in touch with your city's waste/recycling department. http://www.upandaway.org Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them. Always lock safety caps and place the medication in a safe location - one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach.

Terazosin, sold under the brand name Hytrin among others, is a medication used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate and high blood pressure. This, when heated in the presence of 2-chloro-6,7-dimethoxyquinazolin-4-amine (1) undergoes direct alkylation to terazosin (3). Reaction of piperazine with 2-furoyl chloride followed by catalytic hydrogenation of the furan ring leads to 2. In 2019, it was the 203rd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 2 million prescriptions. Terazosin was patented in 1975 and came into medical use in 1985.

The dose may be increased by approximately doubling at weekly or bi-weekly intervals to achieve the desired reduction in symptoms. The terazosin dose should be titrated with particular caution in patients with impaired liver function since terazosin undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism and is mainly excreted by the biliary tract. If it is necessary to stop terazosin therapy, the dose should be re-titrated starting with 1 mg terazosin at bedtime.
