Description
Since spirolactone has antiandrogenic properties, many of its unapproved uses result from this. Because it is inexpensive and inhibits the growth of male-pattern hair, spirolactone is also frequently used for its antiandrogenic effects in transgender female patients. Spironolactone is prescribed to treat New York Heart Association Class III-IV heart failure, edema in adults with cirrhosis that is unresponsive to fluid and sodium restrictions, short-term primary hyperaldosteronism prior to surgery, long-term primary hyperaldosteronism in patients with aldosterone-producing adrenal adenomas who are not candidates for surgery or patients with bilarteral micro/macronodular adrenal hyperplasia, and Spironolactone is prescribed off-label for the treatment of adult acne vulgaris, female pattern hair loss, and hirsutism.
Dosage
Utilize a specific measuring tool or spoon to precisely measure the dosage. If you have any questions, speak with your physician or pharmacist. Do not increase your dose, take it more often than prescribed, or stop using this medicine without first consulting your doctor. Avoid using a regular spoon because you might not get the right dosage. The dosage is determined by your health status and therapeutic response. If stomach upset occurs, take it with food or milk. If you are using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. The dosage is also determined by body weight in children. If your condition gets worse (for instance, if you notice a rise in your usual blood pressure readings), let your doctor know right away. To avoid having to get up in the middle of the night to urinate, it is best to take your dose in the morning (before 6 p.m.). Even if you feel fine, keep taking this medication. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. Keep in mind to use it as instructed each day at the same time(s). Follow your doctor's instructions and take this medication by mouth. This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription. It may also be used to treat water retention (edema) in patients with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or a kidney disorder called nephrotic syndrome. Spironolactone helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low. Spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide are both diuretic medicines (water pills). They reduce the amount of water in the body by increasing the flow of urine, which helps lower the blood pressure.
