Description

Over 90% of patients receiving topical mupirocin demonstrated both clinical cure or improvement in clinical studies of patients with primary and secondary skin infections. One week after the conclusion of treatment, the therapeutic response rate in one clinical study looking at the therapeutic effectiveness of topical mupirocin for impetigo was between 94 and 98%. It mediates its antibacterial activity by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis and formation of bacterial proteins essential for survival. Mupirocin is said to be effective against beta-hemolytic streptococciStreptococcus pyogenes and other susceptible aerobic gram-positive cocci, including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and others. It has been documented that mupirocin resistance can reach 81%. It is possible to produce a modified isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase or acquire a plasmid mediating a new isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase through genetic transfer if you want to develop resistance to mupirocin, which occurs more frequently in methicillin-resistant staphylococci than methicillin-susceptible staphylococci. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is typically eight to thirty times higher than the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against relevant pathogens.

Dosage

Except as directed by your physician, avoid using mupirocin on burns. Never put mupirocin near your eyes. Use it only as directed by your doctor, neither more nor less often. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you are unsure about following. An ointment form of mupirozin is used to treat skin conditions. For one to two weeks, mupirozin is typically applied three times per day. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when using mupirocin. Apply a small amount of the ointment (a thin film) after thoroughly washing the area of affected skin. With sterile gauze dressing, you can dress the area.

Missed dose

As soon as you realize you missed a dose, administer it. Applying a second dose to make up for a missed one is not advised. To continue with your regular dosing schedule, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next one.

Overdose

Call your doctor or the nearest poison control center right away, or go to the hospital right away if you take too much mupirocin.

Storage

Avoid freezing at all costs. Keep away from light and moisture, and keep the temperature below 25° C. Place away from children's reach.

Patch testing remains the gold standard for diagnosis of ACD to topical antibiotics. Reviewed by Jalal Maghfour and Alina Goldenberg, MD, MAS Topical medicaments contain a myriad of ingredients that have the potential to induce allergic contract dermatitis (ACD). Nonetheless, for patients with allergic reaction to both topical neomycin and bacitracin, mupirocin remains an alternative therapeutic option.

Pharmacotherapy The most effective drug therapy for impetigo has not been well-established. Impetigo typically results from a break in the skin, such as from a minor abrasion or insect bite. Several studies compared mupirocin to oral antibiotics (such as cephalexin and dicloxacillin), with no significant difference in cure rates in children with limited disease.

When the skin is open, it is more prone to becoming sensitized to an allergen, so even if the patient wasn’t allergic to neomycin previously, an allergy can develop late in life after prolonged exposure to Neosporin. Polysporin does not have neomycin, it just has polymixin and bacitracin. It is always best to keep any wound “soft” with either Polysporin, Aquaphor, or mupirocin. There are a number of topical antibiotics that are available over the counter. Aquaphor is not an antibiotic, just a healing balm.
