Description

Do not take two doses of prazosin at the same time. Skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the scheduled time if it is almost time for your next dose. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Prazosin is typically taken twice or three times per day, on a regular schedule. Prazosin must be taken exactly as directed. You can take this medicine with or without food.

Dosage

The typical range of daily doses is 6–15 mg. Carefully adhere to the instructions on the prescription label. As directed, take prazosin as directed. Start taking prazosin at a dose of 1 mg twice or three times daily. Your doctor may gradually increase your dose until your maintenance dose is reached. Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose and gradually increase the dose as necessary.

Missed dose

If you missed two or more doses, speak with your doctor. To make up for a missed dose, don't take a second one. To continue with your regular dosing schedule, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next one. When you remember, immediately take the missed dose.

Overdose

Extreme sleepiness or underactive reflexes are two overdose symptoms that may occur. Call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the emergency room.

Storage

You shouldn't flush this medication down the toilet, though. The best way to get rid of your medication is instead through a medication take-back program. All medications should be kept out of the sight and reach of children, as many containers (such as weekly pill containers and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for toddlers to open. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and tightly closed in the original container. If you are unable to participate in a take-back program, visit the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for more details. Keep it at room temperature, away from sources of extreme heat, and dry (not in the bathroom). For information on take-back programs in your neighborhood, speak with your pharmacist or get in touch with the waste/recycling department of your city. Always lock safety caps and store medications up and away, out of sight, and away from young children to prevent poisoning. http://www.upandaway.org Unused medications should be disposed of in special ways to prevent pets, children, and other people from consuming them.

Side effects

Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: weakness, fatigue, headache, nausea, hives, rash, itching difficulty breathing, fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeats, chest pain, painful, prolonged erection of the penis. Prazosin might have negative effects. Tell your doctor if any of these side effects, along with those mentioned in the SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS section, are severe or persistent. These symptoms include: weakness, fatigue, headache, nausea, hives, rash, itching, difficulty breathing, fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and painful, hour-long penile erections.

Interactions

For more information, consult your physician or pharmacist. Tell your doctor right away if you take any of the following medications, which may interact with prazosin: avanafil (Stendra), sildenafil (Viagra, Revatio), tadalafil (Cialis, Adcirca), vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn), and verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, and Verelan). Inform your doctor about all of the medications you take, including vitamins, herbal supplements, prescription and non-prescription drugs.

Contraindications

If you are feeling extremely dizzy or think you might pass out, call your doctor right away. Before you know how prazosin affects you, avoid driving or using heavy equipment. If you are allergic to alfuzosin (Uroxatral), doxazosin (Cardura), or terazosin (Hytrin), or any of the medications that are related to prazosin, you should not take prazosin. If you are taking or have recently taken prazosin, you run the risk of developing the condition known as Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS) during cataract surgery. Call your doctor or head to the emergency room as soon as you can if you experience a prolonged abnormal erection. The drug prazosin may make you feel sleepy. When you first start taking or restart taking prazosin, it may lower blood pressure and make you feel lightheaded or faint. Extremely rarely, prazosin and related drugs have caused painful erections of the penis that lasted for hours and weren't relieved by sexual activity or masturbation. If you are planning to undergo surgery for cataracts (clouding of the eye), let your surgeon know if you are currently taking or have ever taken prazosin. The serious condition known as priapism can result in a person's inability to erection permanently if left untreated.
