Description
Cyproheptadine reduces the body's natural chemical histamine's negative effects. Sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and a runny nose are histamine-related symptoms. Cyproheptadine, the substance that makes up periactin's active ingredient, is a serotonin and histamine antagonist with sedative and anticholinergic properties. Some headache conditions, including migraines, are occasionally treated with periactin. Periactin is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, itching, red or watery eyes, and other symptoms of seasonal allergies (hay fever). The drug is also used to treat eczema and allergic reactions of the skin to insect bites.
Dosage
Before using, check with your physician. Take no more than 12 milligrams each day. Take no more than 16 milligrams each day. Periactin should not be taken in excess of 32 mg per day. The dosage ranges from 4 mg to 20 mg per day, but 12 mg to 16 mg are the most frequently prescribed amounts. The dosage will likely be kept low in patients over 65. For kids aged 7 to 14, the suggested dosage is 4 milligrams (1 tablet) twice or three times per day. It helps you to get best results. Consulting your doctor before using is absolutely necessary. Note that this instruction is being presented here merely for review. Take each Periactin dose with a full glass of water, either with or without food. 4 milligrams (1 tablet) taken three times per day is the recommended dosage for adults. 2 milligrams (one-half tablet) administered two or three times daily is the recommended dosage for kids aged 2 to six. Use only as directed.
Missed dose
Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. If you remember right away, take the missed dose.
Overdose
Dial your doctor's number right away if you experience one of them. Periacitin overdose symptoms can include extreme sleepiness, confusion, hallucinations, a dry mouth, dilated pupils, pale skin, vomiting, and fainting.

And, it should be noted that the anti-serotoninergic effects of cyproheptadine may result in confusion and visual hallucinations at high doses.
