Contraindications
Inform your doctor if you have any drug allergies prior to taking this medication, including those to hydrochlorothiazide, sulfa medications, or other medications. Before you know how hydrochlorothiazide affects you, avoid operating heavy machinery or driving. This medication may have an impact on your glucose levels if you have diabetes. Don't drink too much alcohol. Low potassium levels can cause the following symptoms: abnormal heart rhythms, particularly in people with heart disease; constipation; fatigue; muscle damage; muscle weakness or spasms; paralysis (which can affect the lungs); and dizziness from hydrochlorothiazide. Tell your doctor if you have the following symptoms: decrease in urine output drowsiness headache back pain Tell your doctor if you have prolonged diarrhea or vomiting as this may lead to a serious loss of body water (dehydration) To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of fluids unless your doctor directs you otherwise. In some patients—such as those with severe congestive heart failure—this medication may result in a decline in kidney function. Your potassium levels could be lowered by this medication.
