Hydrochlorothiazide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or kidney disorders. Learn about interactions, side effects, and indications.

Other names for this medication:
Dutoprol, Atacand Hct, Teveten HCT, Ifirmacombi, Urozide, Karvezide, Olmetec Plus, Benicar Hct, Rasilez HCT, Tribenzor

Similar Products:
Nimotop, Lisinopril, Digoxin, Amiodarone, Warfarin, Nimodipine, Cordarone

Because dosing is individualized and can range from 25 to 100 mg, hydrochlorothiazide has a wide therapeutic window but should be used cautiously in patients with impaired kidney or liver function. Hydrochlorothiazide prevents the reabsorption of sodium and water from the distal convoluted tubule, allowing for the increased elimination of water in the urine.

If you feel fine, keep taking hydrochlorothiazide. Without consulting your doctor, do not stop taking hydrochlorothiazide. Never take it in larger or smaller amounts or more frequently than your doctor has instructed. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you do not understand, and carefully follow their instructions. The oral forms of hydrochlorothiazide include tablets, capsules, and solutions (liquids). High blood pressure cannot be cured, but hydrochlorothiazide can manage it. Patients with diabetes insipidus and those who have high blood calcium levels can both benefit from hydrochlorothiazide treatment and prevention of kidney stones. If your doctor prescribes a low-salt or low-sodium diet, or to eat or drink increased amounts of potassium-rich foods (e.g., bananas, prunes, raisins, and orange juice) in your diet, follow these instructions carefully. Typically, it is consumed once or twice per day. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when taking hydrochlorothiazide. When using this medication to treat your condition, discuss any potential risks with your doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you're taking this medication for a condition that isn't listed on the label. Hydrochlorothiazide can be taken every day or just on particular days of the week when treating edema.

Missed dose

Never take two doses at once to make up for missed ones. If, however, it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your typical dosing schedule. As soon as you realize you missed a dose, take it.

Symptoms of an overdose may include nauseousness, dizziness, thirst, dry mouth, and weakened or painful muscles. Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Keep away from light and moisture at a temperature below 30°C. Place away from children's reach.

Without your doctor's permission, you should never start, stop, or modify the dosage of any medications. Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. Keep a list of everything you use, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications, and give it to both your doctor and pharmacist. Make sure all of your doctors and lab personnel are aware that you use this medication. See also the section on how to use. Some products have ingredients that could raise your blood pressure or worsen your swelling. Dofetilide and lithium are a few items that may interact with this medication. Tell your pharmacist what products you are using, and ask how to use them safely (especially cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen). Not every possible drug interaction is covered in this document. This medication may skew the results of some lab tests (like those assessing parathyroid function).

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide or if you have any other allergies before taking it. Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all of your current medical conditions, especially any history of diabetes, gout, kidney, liver, lupus, or skin cancer, before taking this medication. As instructed by your doctor, check your blood sugar frequently. Before breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. With your doctor, go over the advantages and disadvantages. Until you can do something safely, avoid driving, operating machinery, and performing other tasks that call for alertness. This drug should only be taken while expecting if it is absolutely necessary. Diabetes patients may experience hydrochlorothiazide-related blood sugar changes. If you take it for a long time, it may also make you more susceptible to developing skin cancer. Limit alcoholic beverages. Keep sun exposure to a minimum. The side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness, may affect older adults more severely. Tell your doctor if you experience frequent vomiting or diarrhea. Dehydration risk can be exacerbated by excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. If you use marijuana (cannabis), consult your physician. To learn more, speak with your pharmacist. If you experience sunburn, skin blisters or redness, or if any moles or skin lesions appear new or have changed, call your doctor right away. Your potassium levels may drop if you take this medication. You might feel lightheaded if you take this medication. Although this medication passes into breast milk, it is unlikely to harm a nursing baby. You might become more sensitive to the sun as a result of this medication. This product might contain inactive ingredients (like the sulfites found in some brands), which can lead to allergic reactions or other issues. Unless your doctor instructs you otherwise, drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. When outdoors, apply sunscreen and don protective gear. Your doctor may need to modify your diet, exercise routine, or diabetes medication.

Hypersensitivity Reaction • Hypersensitivity reactions to hydrochlorothiazide may occur in patients with or without a history of allergy or bronchial asthma, but are more likely in patients with such a history. There is currently no manufacturer warning information available for this drug. Impaired Renal Function • Monitor renal function periodically in patients treated with candesartan cilexetil and hydrochlorothiazide. The largest and most consistent cardiovascular outcome benefit has been a reduction in the risk of stroke, but reductions in myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality also have been seen regularly.Elevated systolic or diastolic pressure causes increased cardiovascular risk, and the absolute risk increase per mmHg is greater at higher blood pressures, so that even modest reductions of severe hypertension can provide substantial benefit.

Hence, the increased amount of drugs in your system can cause severe complications to your body. Similarly, increased stress levels may ramp up your blood pressure based on the fluctuation of hormones in the body. Moreover, the medicine reduces inflammation or swelling by lowering the salt concentration in the inflammatory fluid forming around the heart and blood vessels.
