inj linezolid dose

For viral infections like the flu, colds, and other contagious diseases, antibiotics like linezolid are ineffective. Bacterial growth is halted, and this is how it functions. The antibiotic linezolid belongs to the oxazolidinones class of antibacterials. Skin infections and pneumonia are both treated with linezolid. Antibiotic overuse increases the likelihood that you'll develop an infection later on that is resistant to antibiotic treatment.

When taking linezolid, keep tyramine-containing foods and beverages to a minimum. Turn the bottle over three to five times to gently mix the oral suspension before using. Children under the age of 11 typically take linezolid two to three times per day (every 8 to 12 hours) for a period of 10 to 28 days, with or without food. Keep the suspension from shaking. Without consulting your doctor, do not stop taking linezolid. Take it only as directed by your doctor, neither more nor less than that amount or more frequently. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you do not understand, and carefully follow them. Tyramine is typically present in pickled, smoked, or fermented foods and drinks. Your infection might not be completely treated if you stop taking linezolid too soon or if you skip doses, and the bacteria might develop an antibiotic resistance. It is usually taken with or without food twice a day (every 12 hours) for 10 to 28 days. Linezolid comes as a tablet and oral suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. Just as it is prescribed, take linezolid. Even if you feel better, keep taking linezolid until the prescription is finished. The length of your treatment depends on the type of infection you have. These foods and beverages include alcoholic beverages, especially beer, Chianti, and other red wines; alcohol-free beer; cheeses (especially strong, aged, or processed varieties); sauerkraut; yogurt; raisins; bananas; sour cream; pickled herring; liver (especially chicken liver); dried meats and sausage (including hard salami and pepperoni); canned figs; avocados; soy sauce; turkey; yeast extracts; papaya products (including certain meat tenderizers); fava beans; and broad bean pods. Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you believe this medication may be prescribed for other purposes.

Missed dose

Never take two doses at once to make up for missed ones. To continue with your regular dosing schedule, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next one. As soon as you remember, take the missed dose.

However, if overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention. An overdose is unlikely to happen if linezolid is administered by a healthcare professional in a hospital setting. Call your local Poison Control Center or get immediate medical help if you take too much linezolid.

Children should not have access to any medications. Formulations for linezolid should be kept in a dark, dry place at room temperature (15°C–30°C).

Inform your doctor about all of the medications you take, including vitamins, herbal supplements, prescription and non-prescription drugs.

As a result of taking Linezolid, patients have experienced convulsions. It is advised to seek immediate ophthalmic attention if patients exhibit signs of visual impairment, such as changes in visual acuity, changes in color vision, blurred vision, or visual field defects. If signs or symptoms occur, physicians should consider discontinuation of either one or both agents. Symptoms of discontinuation can be seen if the concurrent serotonergic agent is stopped. These cases included some where seizure history or seizure risk factors were mentioned. Patients who develop recurrent nausea or vomiting, unexplained acidosis or low bicarbonate level while receiving Linezolid should receive immediate medical evaluation. Where administration of Linezolid and concomitant serotonergic agents are clinically appropriate, patients should be closely observed for signs and symptoms of serotonin syndrome such as cognitive dysfunction, hyperpyrexia, hyperreflexia and incoordination.

Is linezolid a MAO inhibitor?

Healthcare professionals and patients may not realize that linezolid has monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) properties. Linezolid should generally not be given to patients taking serotonergic drugs.

Is linezolid a good antibiotic?

Yes, linezolid (Zyvox) is effective against Methicillin-resistant S. aureus or MRSA. Although vancomycin (Vancocin) still remains as the gold standard for MRSA infections, linezolid (Zyvox) may be an option for certain individuals.

Does linezolid come in IV?

Linezolid injection comes as a solution (liquid) to be infused into a vein. It is usually given as an intravenous infusion over 30 minutes to two hours twice a day (every 12 hours) for 10 to 28 days.

Is linezolid an IV or PO?

Linezolid is available in an intravenous formulation, film-coated tablets and oral suspension. The dose is 600 mg every 12 h and no dose adjustment is needed when switching from the intravenous to oral formulations or when there is moderate renal or hepatic derangement.

What drugs should not be taken with linezolid?

Before using linezolid, report the use of drugs that may increase the risk of extremely high blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) when combined with linezolid, including herbal products (such as ephedra/ma huang), allergy and cold products (including decongestants such as phenylephrine/pseudoephedrine), and stimulants ...

Linezolid is used to treat serious bacterial infections of skin and soft tissue and pneumonia that are resistant to other antibiotics including methicillin and vancomycin. Linezolid also belongs to a class of drugs known as monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors which block the activity of monoamine oxidases, a family of enzymes in the body. MAO inhibition results in increased concentrations of chemicals that nerves use to communicate (neurotransmitters), including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, which can increase the chance of certain side effects and food and drug interactions. Gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria are structurally different, identified by whether they get dyed or not in the Gram stain lab test. Linezolid belongs to a new class of antibiotics known as oxazolidinones.
