What are the side effects of levodopa?
Dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, unusual dreams, or headache may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This medication may cause saliva, urine, or sweat to turn a dark color.
Is levodopa available in the US?
The medication was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 2021 and became available for prescribers in February 2022. For some people with Parkinson's disease (PD), carbidopa/levodopa use is associated with a clinical phenomenon called motor fluctuations.
How long does it take carbidopa levodopa to work?
The short-acting (immediate-release) formulation of carbidopa/levodopa takes effect within about 20 to 50 minutes. The long-acting (extended-release) formulation starts to work closer to the 50-minute timeframe.
How often should carbidopa/levodopa be taken?

If you have wide-angle glaucoma, make sure your ophthalmologist regularly monitors your intraocular pressure. • Do not begin taking Levodopa/Carbidopa within two weeks of taking a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. Tell your doctor if these side effects become worse. Levodopa/Carbidopa is not appropriate for people with undiagnosed skin lesions, narrow-angle glaucoma, or a history of melanoma.
Seek immediate medical help if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling in the face, throat, eyes, lips or tongue.
