Description

Levlen is used as contraception to prevent pregnancy. Additionally, uses of Levlen not covered by this medication guide may also be made. On this leaflet, not all brands are listed. Levlen is available in a variety of brands and dosages.

Dosage

You should disclose to any medical professional or surgeon that you use birth control pills. Information on the exact dosage of Levlen. Read all instruction sheets or medication guides that come with your prescription and follow them exactly. Pay attention to your doctor's advice. Before you completely run out of pills, have your prescription renewed. If you need major surgery or will be on long-term bed rest, you may need to stop using this medicine for a short time. In order to keep you on your regular cycle, some birth control packs include seven "reminder" pills. Store away from moisture, heat, and light at room temperature. Take it without food first. Each day, take one pill, spaced no more than 24 hours apart. The first day of your period or the first Sunday after it starts is when you should take your first pill. Inform your doctor if the bleeding persists or becomes extremely heavy. If you are ill with severe vomiting or diarrhea, use a backup birth control method. Follow the medication's instructions exactly. Start a new pack the next day when the pills are finished. While taking birth control pills, you will need to visit your doctor regularly. If you don't take one pill every day, you risk getting pregnant. Breakthrough bleeding is possible, especially in the first three months. When using this medication for the first time, you might need to use an additional form of birth control, like condoms or a spermicide. The chewable tablet (pill) should be chewed before being swallowed, either whole or with a glass of water, depending on your preference. When you take these reminder pills, your period usually starts.

Missed dose

Pay attention to the patient instructions that came with your medicine. If you are a Sunday starter, keep taking a pill every day until Sunday. Call your doctor because you might be pregnant if you miss your period for two consecutive months. If you forget to take a reminder pill, throw it away and continue taking one reminder pill every day until the bottle is empty. Take two pills on the next day you remember if you forget one active pill. If you are a Day 1 starter, throw the rest of the pack away if you miss three active pills in a row in Weeks 1, 2, or 3. Otherwise, start a new pack the same day. Take two pills a day for two consecutive days if you skip two consecutive active pills in Week 1 or Week 2. If you are a Day 1 starter, you must discard the remaining pills from your pack and begin a new pack the same day if you miss two consecutive active pills in Week 3. If you miss two or more active pills, you may not have a period during the month. Missing a pill raises your likelihood of getting pregnant. Throw away the remainder of the pack on Sunday and begin a new pack that day. After that, take one pill every day for the remainder of the pack. Use back-up birth control for at least 7 days following the missed pills.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness. Get immediate medical help or dial 1-800-222-1222 for poison help.

Smoking increases the risk of getting a blood clot or having a stroke while you are taking birth control pills, especially if you are more than 35 years old. Take this medicine at the same time each day and in the order directed on the package. In some women, tenderness, swelling, or minor bleeding of the gums may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. If you miss more than one pill, this medicine may not be as effective and you may need to use another form of birth control.

But some people have serious depression that comes and goes with their periods—about 1% have a medically recognized condition known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). (FYI, estrogen and progesterone aren’t the only hormones involved in coordinating the whole menstrual cycle, but they’re the two that cause either a period or a pregnancy.) These are averages, and individual IUD users may have higher or lower amounts—that’s what the ± means.

Birth control pills block the surge in estrogen that normally causes an egg to be released from the ovary, thicken the mucus around the cervix—making it harder for sperm to swim up to the egg, and also thin the lining of the uterus preventing an fertilized egg from implanting. The patch has a higher peak value of estrogen than the pill or the ring. The ring doesn’t have high peak values—the amounts of hormones in the blood are stable from week to week. The woman has a set dose of progesterone and a set dose of estrogen… Every day becomes the same pattern.“ For people with PMDD, having the same amount of hormone every day can be a good thing. There are multiple kinds of hormonal birth control, each with unique ingredients that are released differently.
