Irbesartan was granted FDA approval on 30 September 1997., ARBs are not connected with a dry cough, unlike angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.

Storage

You shouldn't flush this medication down the toilet, though. Instead, the best way to dispose of your medication is through a medicine take-back program. It is important to keep all medication out of sight and reach of children as many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and young children can open them easily. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and tightly closed in the original container. See the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website (http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p) for more information if you do not have access to a take-back program. Keep it at room temperature and out of the bathroom and other places with excessive heat and moisture. Talk to your pharmacist or contact your local garbage/recycling department to learn about take-back programs in your community. To protect young children from poisoning, always lock safety caps and immediately place the medication in a safe location – one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach. http://www.upandaway.org Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them.

Irbesartan at a dose of 150 mg once daily generally provides a better 24 hour blood pressure control than 75 mg. In particular, the addition of a diuretic such as hydrochlorothiazide has been shown to have an additive effect with irbesartan (see section 4.5). No dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with impaired renal function. However, initiation of therapy with 75 mg could be considered, particularly in haemodialysed patients and in the elderly over 75 years.

This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly.

In hypertensive type 2 diabetic patients, therapy should be initiated at 150 mg irbesartan once daily and titrated up to 300 mg once daily as the preferred maintenance dose for treatment of renal disease. In particular, the addition of a diuretic such as hydrochlorothiazide has been shown to have an additive effect with Irbesartan Zentiva (see section 4.5). A lower starting dose (75 mg) should be considered for patients undergoing haemodialysis (see section 4.4).
