A prescription drug called Harvoni is used to treat the following conditions: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection of genotypes 1, 4, 5, or 6 Chronic HCV/HIV co-infections Harvoni is administered in combination with ribavirin to treat HCV genotype 1 infection with advanced cirrhosis or HCV genotype 1 or 4 infection with or without cirrhosis in patients who have received a liver transplant. This medication may also be prescribed for other conditions.

Dosage

Within 30 minutes, take the entire mixture without chewing after thoroughly blending. The absorption of ledipasvir is decreased by antacids. How to safely use these medications should be discussed with your doctor or pharmacist. Even if symptoms subside quickly, keep taking ledipasvir/sofosbuvir for the full amount of time recommended. If you are taking an antacid, take it at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after this medication. When taking this medication with food, open the packet(s) and pour the pellets into a small bowl along with one or more spoonfuls of a non-acidic soft food (such as pudding, mashed potatoes, or ice cream). Other acid-reducing drugs for heartburn, ulcers, or indigestion, such as omeprazole and famotidine, whether prescribed or over-the-counter, may stop ledipasvir from working. Before beginning to take ledipasvir/sofosbuvir and each time you receive a refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet and Instructions for Use, if available from your pharmacist. Repeat these steps if your dose is for more than one packet. If you stop taking the medication too soon, the infection might come back. Without chewing, inhale the pellets. Spread out your doses of this medication evenly. According to your doctor's instructions, typically once daily, take this medication by mouth with or without food. Within five hours of taking this medication, if you vomit, call your doctor. Your medical condition and treatment response are taken into account when determining the dosage. The soft food must be either cold or at room temperature. The amount of drug in your body should be kept constant for this medication to work at its best. Take it at the same time every day to help yourself remember. To take this medication without food, open the packet and pour the pellets directly into your mouth. If you feel thirsty after inhaling the pellets, you can drink water. You might need to administer another dose.

Missed dose

To catch up, don't double the dose. If you forget to take a dose, do so as soon as you remember, unless there are less than six hours until the next dose. Skip the missed dose in that case. When the time comes, take your next dose.

Overdose

Call your neighborhood poison control center or go to the hospital right away if you take too much Harvoni.

Interactions

Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take any of the following medicines: amiodarone (Cordarone) an antacid that contains aluminum or magnesium hydroxide. Both the action of other drugs and the action of Harvoni may be impacted by each other. Inform your healthcare provider of all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. If you also take other medications containing sofosbuvir (Sovaldi), you shouldn't take Harvoni.

Contraindications

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any other allergies prior to taking ledipasvir/sofosbuvir, especially if you are allergic to either medication. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: other liver problems (such as hepatitis B), diabetes. Breast-feeding is not recommended if this medication is used in combination with ribavirin. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor. Speak with a doctor or a pharmacist. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Hepatitis C treatment may lower your blood sugar if you have diabetes. If you or your partner becomes pregnant, or if you think you or your partner may be pregnant, tell your doctor right away. It is unknown if this medication enters breast milk. Neither the pregnant woman nor her male partner should use ledipasvir/sofosbuvir in combination with ribavirin while she is carrying a child. For more information, consult your pharmacist. Tell your doctor right away if you have symptoms of low blood sugar such as sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands/feet. An unborn child could be harmed by the mixture. This can increase your risk of low blood sugar, so your doctor may adjust your diabetes treatment plan. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. When at least one sexual partner is taking these medications concurrently, and for six months after stopping treatment, two effective methods of birth control (such as condoms, birth control pills) must be used.
