Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Glucovance is a prescription medication used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps to lower the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This medication may be prescribed for other uses.

Dosage

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Exactly as directed by your doctor, take this medication. The dose should be adjusted based on patient response, blood glucose levels, and other medications the patient is taking. The starting dose of Glucovance for the management of type 2 diabetes is 1.25 mg glyburide/250 mg metformin once daily with meals. The dosage your doctor recommends may vary depending on the following factors: the condition being treated, other medical conditions you have, other medications you are taking, and how you respond to this medication.

Missed dose

Do not combine two doses at once. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medication as soon as you remember.

Overdose

Severe hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis may result from an overdose. Call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the emergency room.

Contraindications

Until you know how Glucovance affects you, avoid operating heavy machinery or driving. If you have any of the following conditions, you should not take Glucovance: you have an allergy to Glucovance or any of its ingredients; you have liver or kidney disease; you have acute or chronic metabolic acidosis; you have congestive heart failure that is being treated with digoxin (Lanoxin) or furosemide (Lasix); you drink excessive amounts of alcohol; you are dehydrated; you are going to have surgery; you have had a heart attack, stroke, or severe infection Extreme tiredness Weakness or discomfort Unusual or unexpected stomach pain Decreased appetite Deep and rapid breathing or shortness of breath Dizziness Lightheadedness Fast or slow heart beat Flushing of the skin Muscle pain Feeling cold Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Dizziness is a side effect of glucovance that can be accompanied by lightheadedness, shakiness, hunger, chest pain, rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bleeding or bruising, fever, sore throat, and swelling of the eyes, face, tongue, or throat. Lactic acidosis is one of the serious side effects associated with Glucovance. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have some or all of the following symptoms of hypoglycemia. If you experience any of the following signs or symptoms of lactic acidosis, contact your healthcare provider right away.
