Description

For more information, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Galantamine is a prescription drug used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, a condition that impairs memory, thought processes, and daily functioning. In individuals with Alzheimer's disease, galantamine may enhance thinking and memory skills or mitigate the loss of these capacities. However, galantamine will not cure Alzheimer's disease or prevent the loss of mental abilities at some time in the future. Other prescriptions for this drug are possible.

Dosage

How to use the oral solution should be demonstrated to you by your physician or pharmacist. Don't force the plunger in. Before you take galantamine oral solution for the first time, read the written instructions that come with it. Even if you feel well, keep taking galantamine. Never stop taking galantamine without consulting your doctor first. Never take it in larger or smaller amounts or more frequently than directed by your doctor. Instantaneously consume the entire mixture. By fully inflating the plunger, completely empty the contents of the pipette into the beverage. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you are unsure about following. Galantamine comes in tablet, extended-release (long-acting) capsule, and oral solution (liquid) forms. Galantamine may cause stomach discomfort, especially early in your treatment. Hold the bottom ring of the pipette and remove the pipette from the bottle. Call your doctor before you resume taking galantamine if you stop taking it for a few days or longer. Put the pipette all the way inside the galantamine bottle. Prepare 3 to 4 ounces (about 1/2 cup [90 to 120 milliliters]) of any non-alcoholic beverage. Take the pipette (the tube used to measure galantamine dose) out of the case. Reapply the plastic cap to the galantamine bottle to seal it. Take the cap off. Place the open end of the empty pipette into a glass of water, pull the plunger out to drain the water, and then push the plunger back in. Drink is thoroughly stirred. Do not chew, crush, or swallow the extended-release capsules in pieces. Take galantamine every day at about the same time(s). Follow the galantamine dosage instructions precisely. In addition to consuming 6 to 8 glasses of water each day, take galantamine with food. Taken once daily in the morning, the extended-release capsules are typically. The tablets and liquid should ideally be consumed with the morning and evening meals. By doing this, you might experience fewer nausea attacks while receiving treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you believe this medication should be used for something else. To use the oral solution, perform the following actions: Push the child-proof cap down while turning it to the left to open it. Keep eating normally unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. Pull the plunger of the pipette up to the marking that indicates the dosage your doctor recommended while holding the pipette's bottom ring. If you adhere to the exact dosing regimen advised by your doctor, you are less likely to experience galantamine side effects. Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose of galantamine and gradually increase it, no more frequently than once every four weeks. It's likely that your doctor will advise you to begin taking galantamine at the lowest dose possible and gradually increase it to the dose you were previously taking.

Missed dose

Never double the dose of a medication to make up for a missed one. If your next scheduled dose is almost due, skip the missed dose. The missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember.

Overdose

Severe nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, muscle weakness or spasm, watery eyes, drooling, increased urination or bowel movements, sweating, a slow heartbeat, feeling dizzy or faint, and seizures (convulsions) are just a few of the overdose symptoms that can occur. Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help if you need immediate medical attention.

Storage

Don't freeze. However, you shouldn't dispose of this medication in the toilet. Instead, using a medication take-back program is the best way to get rid of your medication. As many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for young children to open, it is crucial to keep all medications out of sight and out of reach of children. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and tightly closed in the original container. If you do not have access to a take-back program, visit the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for more information. Store it at room temperature, away from sources of extreme heat, and dry (not in the bathroom). To find out about take-back programs in your neighborhood, speak with your pharmacist or get in touch with your city's garbage/recycling department. Always lock safety caps and immediately put the medication in a safe place, one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach. http://www.upandaway.org Unused medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them.

What does galantamine do in the brain?

Galantamine is in a class of medications called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. It works by increasing the amount of a certain natural substance in the brain that is needed for memory and thought. Galantamine may improve the ability to think and remember or slow the loss of these abilities in people who have AD.

What does galantamine do for Alzheimer's?

A decreased amount of acetylcholine has been linked to dementia. Galantamine works to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine. This increases the concentration of the chemical in the brain, and may help decrease the symptoms of dementia. This drug may not work as well when Alzheimer's disease gets worse.

What are the possible side effects for Razadyne galantamine?

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of appetite, and weight loss may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. It also boosts IGF-s levels in the brain, which encourages the growth of new brain cells. This reduces overexposure to inflammation and may also block the production of cytokines. The drug is especially effective when used early, i.e., as soon as the condition is diagnosed, and it should be continued for more than 1 year. In Russia and Europe, Galantamine was traditionally used as a remedy for myopathy or muscular weakness and sensory and motor dysfunction caused by central nervous system issues.

The use of galantamine is contraindicated in patients with creatinine clearance less than 9 mL/min, (see section 4.3). In individual patients not showing an increased response or not tolerating 24 mg/day, a dose reduction to 16 mg/day should be considered. Thereafter, the clinical benefit of galantamine and the patient's tolerance of treatment should be reassessed on a regular basis according to current clinical guidelines. Galzemic XL is for oral use and should be administered once daily in the morning, preferably with food. There is no relevant use of galantamine in the paediatric population.

This medication works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. Ask your pharmacist about any information that is unclear. If you stop taking galantamine for longer than 3 days, your doctor may direct you to restart this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose to reduce your risk of side effects. Drink plenty of fluids with this medication unless instructed otherwise. Your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.

Whether doctors will prescribe both medicines together, especially on the NHS, is unclear. In the first instance, these drugs can only be prescribed by a consultant. This factsheet explains how the main drug treatments for Alzheimer’s disease work, where to access them, and when they can be prescribed and used effectively. Donepezil, rivastigmine and galantamine prevent an enzyme known as acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine in the brain.

It is also a natural nutritional supplement sold for supporting healthy memory function. In contrast, performance on two of the processing speed measures showed significant improvement in the placebo condition, whereas that of the patients treated with galantamine did not improve. However, in the real world, the difference is one of compliance; once a day is easier than twice or three times.
