erythromycin suspension

Colds, the flu, and other viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics like erythromycin. Erythromycin is in a class of medications called macrolide antibiotics. Erythromycin is used to treat some bacterial infections, such as those of the respiratory tract, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, Legionnaires' disease (a type of lung infection), and pertussis (whooping cough), diphtheria (a serious throat infection), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as syphilis, and infections of the ear, intestine, gynecological, urinary tract, and skin. It is also used to stop reoccurring rheumatic fever. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Antibiotic overuse increases your risk of developing a later infection that is resistant to antibiotic treatment.

Description

A word on hepatotoxicity, pseudomembranous colitis, and antimicrobial resistance Despite this, it's crucial to carry out bacterial susceptibility testing prior to giving this antibiotic because resistance is a frequent problem that could impact treatment. Particularly when erythromycin estolate is administered, erythromycin can result in hepatic dysfunction, cholestatic jaundice, and abnormal liver transaminases. Erythromycin has no impact on the synthesis of nucleic acids. Note that erythromycin and/or sulfonamide therapy may result in the emergence of Staphylococci that are resistant to these drugs. Macrolides, such as erythromycin, treat bacterial infections by inhibiting protein synthesis and translation to stop bacterial growth. However, it has been discovered that when erythromycin and sulfonamides are combined, many Haemophilus influenzae strains that are resistant to erythromycin alone become susceptible. The severity of pseudomembranous colitis can range from mild to life-threatening and has been associated with the majority of antibacterial drugs, including erythromycin. Therefore, if a patient develops diarrhea after receiving antibacterial medication, the doctor should consider this diagnosis. The majority of the strains of the following microorganisms have been shown to be susceptible to this medication, making it an effective treatment for in vitro and clinical infections.

Dosage

Continue to take erythromycin even if you feel well. Never stop taking erythromycin without first consulting your doctor. Take it only as directed by your doctor, neither more nor less than that amount or more frequently. Erythromycin comes as a capsule, tablet, delayed-release (releases the medication in the intestine to prevent break-down of the medication by stomach acids) capsule, delayed-release tablet, and an oral suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. Erythromycin is also used sometimes used to prevent heart infection in people having dental or other procedures. If there is anything you do not understand about the instructions on your prescription label, ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify it. Avoid measuring your dose with a regular spoon if you're taking the suspension. It usually is taken with or without food every 6 hours (four times a day), every 8 hours (three times a day), or every 12 hours (twice a day). To mix the medication evenly, thoroughly shake the suspension before each use. Do not chew or crush the capsules or tablets; instead, swallow them whole with a full glass of water. Follow the prescription for erythromycin precisely. Discuss the potential risks of using this medication for your condition with your doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you believe this medication should be used for something else. Continue eating normally unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. Use the cup, dropper, or measuring spoon that came with the medicine, or a spoon designed just for measuring medicine.

Missed dose

Never take two doses at once to make up for missed ones. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. As soon as you realize you missed a dose, take it.

Overdose

Call 911 right away if the victim has fallen, experienced a seizure, is having trouble breathing, or cannot be roused. Dial 1-800-222-1222 to reach the poison control hotline in the event of an overdose. You can find information online at https://www.poisonhelp.org/help.

Storage

This medication should not, however, be flushed down the toilet. Instead, using a medication take-back program is the best way to get rid of your medication. As many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for young children to open, it is crucial to keep all medications out of sight and out of reach of children. Keep this medication tightly closed in its original container away from the reach of children. If you do not have access to a take-back program, visit the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for more details. Store it at room temperature, away from sources of extreme heat, and dry (not in the bathroom). To find out about take-back programs in your area, speak with your pharmacist or the garbage/recycling department in your city. Always lock safety caps and immediately put the medication in a safe place, one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach. http://www.upandaway.org Unused medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them.

Erythromycin may cause QT prolongation with antibiotics and antipsychotics that also increase QT prolongation and also ventricular arrhythmia. Side effects with erythromycin tend to be mainly gastrointestinal in nature and most commonly dose-related side effects do include diarrhea, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Erythromycin is a bacteriostatic agent, which means it suppresses bacterial protein synthesis. An interesting drug interaction, there is an increased risk of hypotension and shock with the use of calcium channel blocker therapy, especially in high doses. Now go out and be your best self today and as always happy nursing.

Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as streptococcal infections of the throat ("strep throat") and skin, lung infections such as pneumonia, pelvic inflammatory disease, erythrasma, whooping cough, listeriosis, intestinal amebiasis, and STDs (syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia). Other fluoroquinolone antibiotics include levofloxacin (Levaquin), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), gatifloxacin (Tequin), norfloxacin (Noroxin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), and trovafloxacin (Trovan). Erythromycin works by preventing bacterial cells from growing and multiplying by interfering with their ability to make proteins while not affecting human cells. Other macrolide antibiotics include azithromycin (Zithromax, Zmax) and clarithromycin (Biaxin).
