Side effects
Rarely will this medication cause a very serious allergic reaction. Your immune system can start to fight off infections you've already had as it becomes more robust, which could lead to the recurrence of disease symptoms. If you experience any of the following severe symptoms, seek immediate medical attention: signs of liver disease (such as persistent nausea or vomiting, appetite loss, stomach or abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine), and signs of lactic acidosis (such as rapid or deep breathing, drowsiness, nausea or vomiting). Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any severe symptoms, such as unexplained weight loss, extreme fatigue, muscle or joint pain, severe or persistent headaches, numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, arms, or legs, changes in vision, signs of infection (such as fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, difficulty breathing, cough, or non-healing skin sores), or symptoms of an overactive thyroid (such as irritability, nervousness, Headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, or trouble sleeping may occur. Get medical attention right away, though, if you experience any of the signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as a rash, itching or swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. Alert your doctor or pharmacist right away if any of these side effects last longer than expected or get worse. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any other effects that aren't covered above. For medical advice about side effects in Canada, call your doctor. Rarely, lamivudine has resulted in serious (and occasionally fatal) liver issues as well as an accumulation of lactic acid in the blood (lactic acidosis). Keep in mind that your doctor has prescribed this medicine because they believe it will benefit you more than it will harm you. Also see the Warning section. Any serious side effects, such as mental/mood changes (such as depression), stomach/back pain with nausea (pancreatitis), easy bleeding/bruising, or anemia symptoms (unusual fatigue, rapid heartbeat, pale/bluish skin), should be reported to your doctor right away. Patients who are obese and who are female may experience these severe side effects more frequently. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Even months after beginning HIV treatment, this reaction is possible at any time. If your immune system becomes overactive, you might also experience symptoms. Interactions
For more information, consult your physician or pharmacist. Tell your doctor right away if you take any of the following drugs, especially emtricitabine, zalcitabine (Hivid), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra), an antibiotic. If you are unsure whether you are taking any of these drugs, ask your doctor. Inform your doctor about all of the medications you take, including vitamins, herbal supplements, prescription and non-prescription drugs. Contraindications
You may feel more lightheaded after consuming alcohol or marijuana (cannabis). Avoid alcoholic beverages because they may increase your risk for liver problems and/or pancreatitis. Steer clear of alcoholic beverages. Do not breastfeed because breast milk can spread HIV. Inform your surgeon or dentist about all the products you use, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications. Before taking lamivudine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: pancreatitis, kidney problems, liver problems (such as hepatitis B or C, cirrhosis), alcohol use. Caution is advised when using this drug in children because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug, especially the increased risk of pancreatitis. With your doctor, go over the advantages and disadvantages. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Lamivudine gets into breast milk. If you use marijuana (cannabis), speak with your doctor. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication. You may experience lightheadedness after taking this medication. This product might include inactive components that could lead to allergic reactions or other issues. HIV transmission to your unborn child can be reduced with treatment.
Glossary boosting agent Booster drugs are used to ‘boost’ the effects of protease inhibitors and some other antiretrovirals. The 96 week data presented in Sydney show that patients taking either the boosted or unboosted regimen had rapid and potent suppression of HIV that was sustained throughout the 96 weeks of treatment. But there were fewer virologic failures among people taking atazanavir boosted by ritonavir (5 vs 16).
It is important to use alcohol cautiously during taking this medication. Epivir comes in the tab, oral solution form to take by mouth. Don’t take more or longer than your doctor recommended. It is better to drink several glasses of water each day while you are taking Epivir to protect your kidneys. The combination of alcohol and Epivir may cause flushing and a fast heart rate.
