Description

Emtricitabine is an antiviral medicine that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying in your body. HIV/AIDS cannot be treated with emtricitabine. HIV, a virus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), is treated with emtricitabine. Emtricitabine may also be utilized for other conditions not covered in this medication guide.

Dosage

Detailed instructions on Emtricitabine dosage Without consulting your doctor, never alter your dosage or schedule for taking medications. Try not to freeze. Emtricitabine should not be your only HIV treatment. Take this medication only as directed and never in excess of that. You can take emtricitabine with or without food. Emtricitabine doses are based on weight in children, and any changes may affect your child's dose. You have three months to use up emtricitabine liquid that has been stored at room temperature. Every person with HIV or AIDS needs to continue receiving medical attention. Observe all guidelines provided on the prescription label. Before you completely run out of medicine, have your prescription filled. A variety of medications are typically used to treat HIV/AIDS. If a child is using this medicine, tell your doctor if the child has any changes in weight. Ask your pharmacist for a dose-measuring tool if you don't already have one. If you have hepatitis B, you might experience liver symptoms even months after stopping this medication if you stop taking it. Using the dosing syringe that is included, or a dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup, measure liquid medications. Read the medication manual or patient instructions that come with each prescription. Away from moisture, heat, and bright light, keep capsules at room temperature. Put liquids in the fridge. Follow your doctor's instructions when using all medications. You might require routine blood tests while taking emtricitabine. If you stop taking the medication, even temporarily, your illness might develop a resistance to emtricitabine. Your doctor may want to check your liver function for several months after you stop using emtricitabine. Your kidney and liver function may also need to be checked.

Missed dose

To make up for a missed dose, do not take more medication. If the time for your next scheduled dose is almost up, skip the missed dose. When you remember, take the missed dose.

Overdose

Call 911 right away if the victim has collapsed, experienced a seizure, is having difficulty breathing, or cannot be roused. To report an overdose, dial 1-800-222-1222 for the poison control hotline. Information is also available online at https://www.poisonhelp.org/help.

Storage

After three months, throw away any unopened, unrefrigerated oral solutions. You should not, however, dispose of this medication in the toilet. The oral solution can be kept at room temperature for up to three months if you don't want to refrigerate it. Instead, using a medication take-back program is the best way to get rid of your medication. All medications should be kept out of the sight and reach of children, as many of the containers (such as weekly pill containers and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for small children to open. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and tightly closed in the original container. If you do not have access to a take-back program, you can find more information at the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website (http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p). The capsules should be kept at room temperature, away from sources of extreme heat, and dry (not in the bathroom). Do not freeze the oral solution; instead, keep it in the refrigerator. To find out about take-back programs in your neighborhood, speak with your pharmacist or get in touch with your city's garbage/recycling department. Always lock safety caps and immediately put the medication in a safe place, one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach. http://www.upandaway.org Unused medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them.

Contraindications

A "flare-up" is when the illness reappears suddenly and gets worse than before. If you experience any of the following symptoms of lactic acidosis, contact your doctor right away. If any of the following symptoms of liver problems appear, contact your doctor right away. Some patients taking emtricitabine and other anti-HIV-1 medications have noticed changes in their body fat. Do not take emtricitabine if you are allergic to any ingredient in it. To check for HBV that is worsening, follow-up includes medical examinations and blood tests. After stopping emtricitabine therapy, if you also have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, you will require close medical monitoring for a while. A hospital visit may be necessary for treatment of lactic acidosis, which can be a medical emergency. It's also possible to lose fat from the arms, face, and legs. Patients with HBV infection, who take emtricitabine and then stop it, may get "flare-ups" of their hepatitis. Some people who have taken drugs like emtricitabine, a nucleoside analog, have developed the serious condition known as lactic acidosis, which is characterized by an accumulation of an acid in the blood. Some people who have taken medicines like emtricitabine have developed serious liver problems called hepatotoxicity, with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the liver (steatosis). These conditions' origins and potential long-term effects on health are currently unknown. The amount of fat in your breast, around your main body part (trunk), upper back and neck (the "buffalo hump"), and around your breasts may increase as a result of these changes. You go several days or longer without feeling hungry. Your arm and legs in particular feel cold. You experience faintness or vertigo. (Nausea) You experience an upset stomach. You experience extreme fatigue or weakness. You have an erratic or rapid heartbeat. You experience abdominal (lower stomach) pain. You are feeling sick to your stomach and want to vomit. You're having breathing problems. You're experiencing unusual (abnormal) muscle pain. If you're a woman, very overweight (obese), or have taken nucleoside analog medications like emtricitabine for a long time, you may be more susceptible to developing lactic acidosis or liver issues. Your bowel movements (stools) turn light in color. Your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice). Your urine turns dark.

What does emtricitabine do in the body?

Emtricitabine is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Emtricitabine is in a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood.

Can emtricitabine be used as PrEP?

PrEP involves taking the combination drug emtricitabine-tenofovir (Truvada) or emtricitabine plus tenofovir alafenamide (Descovy) every day.

Does Biktarvy cause hair loss?

Hair loss (alopecia) with the use of Biktarvy has been reported in several case reports, but has not been described in Biktarvy clinical studies conducted by the manufacturer. Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), the nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) contained in Biktarvy may possibly lead to hair loss.

Who makes or manufactures Stribild?

Stribild, a prescription medication used to treat HIV, is made by Gilead Sciences Inc. You can contact Gilead at 1-650-574-3000. They are located in Foster City, California.

Is emtricitabine generic?

The FDA announced in a press release that the generic version of Truvada (emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, Gilead Sciences; FTC/TDF) is “bioequivalent and therapeutically equivalent to the reference listed drug.” It is a product of Teva Pharmaceuticals USA.

As the immune system gets stronger, it may have an increased response to a previously hidden infection. These are not all the possible side effects of emtricitabine. Store emtricitabine oral solution in a refrigerator, between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C). You may receive a medicine to treat your HBV infection.

In a study of 498 men, the mean changes from baseline to week 24 in BMD ranged from 0.4% to 1.0% across hip, spine, femoral neck and trochanter in men who received daily emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil prophylaxis (n = 247) vs. placebo (n = 251). P values for URAI refer to the null hypothesis that efficacy differed between subgroup strata (URAI, no URAI). The time to onset of protection after commencing emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil is unknown. Emtricitabine/Tenofovir disoproxil Zentiva should be avoided in antiretroviral-experienced patients with HIV-1 harbouring the K65R mutation (see section 5.1).

Patients who consume Truvada cannot take atazanavir without also taking ritonavir. Always ask your health care professional for complete information about this product and your specific health needs. Rifampin and anything containing hypericum perforatum, or St. John's wort, can leave efavirenz ineffective, likely resulting in the HIV becoming immune to the medicine.
