Wellbutrin is an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. Other uses of wellbutrin not covered in this medication guide are possible.


Be sure to carefully follow the instructions on your prescription label. If your liver and/or kidney does not work well, your dose and the number of times you take Wellbutrin will be reduced. Exactly as directed by your doctor, take this medication. The starting dose of Wellbutrin (bupropion hydrochloride) is 200 mg per day, given as 100 mg twice daily. Your doctor may adjust this dose based on your response to the medication, your kidney function, and your liver function. The daily maximum dose is 450 mg, given orally three times a day in doses of 150 mg each. The recommended dosage is 300 mg per day, divided into three doses of 100 mg. In order to lower your risk for seizures, your doctor will gradually increase your dose.

Missed dose

To make up for a missed dose, do not take more medication. If your next scheduled dose is almost due, skip the missed dose. The missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember.


But if overdose is thought to have occurred, get emergency medical help. It is unlikely that an overdose will happen if Wellbutrin is given by a healthcare professional in a medical setting. Bupropion and a variety of medications can interact. This medication guide does not include all possible interactions. Any medications you currently take, as well as any you begin or stop taking while taking Wellbutrin, should be disclosed to your doctor. Medicines can interact with one another, including antidepressants. There are additional side effects associated with antidepressant medications. Within the first few months of treatment, some children, teenagers, and young adults taking antidepressant medications may experience an increase in suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Antidepressants are prescription medications used to treat various illnesses, including depression. If any of the following symptoms are present in you or a family member, seek medical attention right away, especially if they are new, worse, or concern you: suicidal thoughts or attempts, new or worse depression, new or worse anxiety, feeling agitated or restless, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), acting aggressively, being angry or violent, acting on dangerous impulses, or a sharp increase in activity and talking (moodiness). Between appointments, whenever necessary, give the doctor a call, especially if you have worries about your symptoms. Any new or unexpected changes in mood, behavior, thoughts, or feelings should be reported right away to the healthcare provider. Suicidal thoughts and deeds are most commonly brought on by depression and other severe mental illnesses. Alcohol consumption should be kept to a minimum while taking Wellbutrin. Until you understand how Wellbutrin affects you, avoid operating heavy equipment or driving a car. Never begin taking new medications without first consulting your healthcare provider. If you have or have ever had epilepsy or a seizure disorder, are currently taking any other form of bupropion (immediate-release, sustained-release, extended-release tablets), drink a lot and stop drinking suddenly, or use sedatives (drugs that make you sleepy) or benzodiazepines and stop using them abruptly, you should not take Wellbutrin. Hypertension: Some people taking Wellbutrin experience high blood pressure, which can be severe. How can I keep an eye out for signs of suicidal ideation or behavior in a family member or myself? If this happens to you, call your doctor. If you suddenly stop drinking alcohol, you may increase your risk of having seizures. If you typically consume a lot of alcohol, consult your physician before abruptly ceasing. Stop using this medication and contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: thoughts of suicide or death, an extreme increase in activity and talking (mania), attempts to commit suicide, changes in thinking or behavior that are not normal for you, agitation, hostility, new or worse depression, or you notice or hear things that are not normal for you. It is important to talk about all the risks associated with treating depression as well as the risks associated with not treating it. Keep a list of all your medications to show the doctor. Keep all scheduled follow-up appointments with the doctor. Understand all of the medications you or a member of your family take. Bipolar episodes. If you use a nicotine patch or another form of nicotine replacement therapy in addition to quitting smoking, your risk of developing high blood pressure may increase.
