Clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, is the 3-chloro derivative of Imipramine. The mood does not improve for about two weeks despite the fact that this response happens right away. The cerebral cortex and hippocampus are now thought to experience changes in receptor sensitivity. The reuptake of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin by nerve cells was thought to be the only mechanism by which tricyclic antidepressants function. Presynaptic receptors are impacted: 1 and 1 receptors become sensitized, whereas 2 receptors become desensitized (resulting in increased noradrenaline production). The hippocampus is part of the limbic system, a part of the brain involved in emotions. Tricyclics are also known as effective analgesics for different types of pain, especially neuropathic or neuralgic pain.

Once daily at bedtime after a few weeks of therapy, clomipramine is typically taken. As the body gets used to the medication at the start of treatment, clomipramine is typically taken three times daily with meals. Clomipramine comes as a capsule to take by mouth. Despite feeling fine, keep taking clomipramine. Without first consulting your doctor, do not stop taking clomipramine. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you do not understand, and carefully follow them. Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, weakness, disturbed sleep, fever, and irritability are just a few withdrawal symptoms you might experience if you stop taking clomipramine abruptly. It may take several weeks or longer for you to feel the full benefit of clomipramine. Take clomipramine exactly as directed. Maintain your normal diet unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. Your doctor might prescribe you a low dose of clomipramine and then gradually increase it. Your dose will likely be gradually reduced by your doctor.

Missed dose

Never take two doses at once to make up for missed ones. If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed one and carry on with your regular dosing schedule. When you remember, immediately take the missed dose.

Clomipramine overdose is dangerous. Aside from extreme drowsiness and slow breathing, overdose symptoms can also include irregular heartbeats, restlessness or agitation, confusion, severe sweating, slow or jerky muscle movements, feeling like you might pass out, seizures, or coma. Call the Poison Help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 or seek immediate medical attention.

You shouldn't flush this medication down the toilet, though. Instead, utilizing a medicine take-back program is the best way to get rid of your medication. All medications should be kept out of the sight and reach of children, as many containers (such as weekly pill containers and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for small children to open. Keep this medication tightly closed in the original container and out of the reach of children. If you are unable to participate in a take-back program, visit the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website at for more details. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). For information on take-back programs in your neighborhood, speak with your pharmacist or get in touch with the waste/recycling department of your city. Always lock safety caps and store medications up and away, out of sight, and away from young children to prevent poisoning. Unused medications should be disposed of in special ways to prevent pets, children, and other people from consuming them.
