Cefpodoxime is an oral third generation cephalosporin antibiotic with effectiveness against most Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Cefpodoxime proxetil is a prodrug that is absorbed and converted to Cefpodoxime by the intestinal mucosa. It is frequently used to treat acute otitis media, pharyngitis, and sinusitis.

To treat gonorrhea, a single dose is administered. Cefpodoxime comes as a tablet and suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. Despite feeling better, keep taking cefpodoxime until the medication is finished. Never take it in quantities or frequencies other than those recommended by your doctor. If there is anything you do not understand about the instructions on your prescription label, ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify it. Your infection might not be fully treated if you stop taking cefpodoxime too soon or skip doses, and the bacteria might develop an antibiotic resistance. Make an appointment with your physician if your symptoms do not subside or worsen. It is usually taken every 12 hours for 5 to 14 days depending on the condition being treated. Shake the suspension well before each use to mix the medication evenly. Cefpodoxime should be taken every day at roughly the same time. Follow the prescription for cefpodoxime exactly. The suspension can be taken with or without food, while the tablet should be taken with food. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you believe this medication should be used for something else. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, continue your normal diet. In the initial days of cefpodoxime therapy, you should start to feel better.

Missed dose

Do not combine two doses at once. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medication as soon as you remember.

Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea are possible overdose symptoms. Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

You should not, however, dispose of this medication in the toilet. A medicine take-back program is the preferable method for getting rid of your medication. All medications should be kept out of the sight and reach of children, as many containers (such as weekly pill containers and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for toddlers to open. After 14 days, discard any unused liquid medication; keep it tightly closed in the refrigerator. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and tightly closed in the original container. If you do not have access to a take-back program, visit the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website at for more details. Keep the tablets at room temperature, away from light, excessive heat, and moisture (not in the bathroom). Talk to your pharmacist or contact your local garbage/recycling department to learn about take-back programs in your community. Always lock safety caps and immediately stow medication up and away, out of sight, and away from reach of young children to prevent poisoning. Unneeded medications should be disposed of in a specific manner to prevent pets, kids, and other people from eating them.
