Description

By reducing the parasite's ability to produce energy, albendazole causes degenerative changes in its intestinal and tegument cells, which ultimately cause the parasite to become immobile and die. As cytoplasmic microtubules are critical in promoting glucose uptake in larval and adult stages of the susceptible parasites, the glycogen stores of the parasites are depleted. Degenerative changes in the endoplasmic reticulum, the mitochondria of the germinal layer, and the subsequent release of lysosomes result in decreased production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the energy required for the survival of the helminth. By attaching to tubulin's colchicine-sensitive site, it prevents tubulin from polymerizing or assembling into microtubules, which is how it functions.

Dosage

It is possible to take albendazole orally as a tablet. Roundworms, hookworms, threadworms, whipworms, pinworms, flukes, and other parasites—animals or plants that live inside other living things to gain an advantage—as well as other infections are occasionally treated with albendazole. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you are unsure about following. If you are giving the medication to a child or if you cannot swallow the tablets whole, you may crush or chew the tablets and swallow the medication with a drink of water. Your infection might not be completely treated if you stop taking albendazole too soon or skip doses. Usually, two times per day, it is taken with food. Every day, take albendazole around the same time. Take albendazole exactly as directed. Even if you feel better, continue taking albendazole until the medication is gone. The risks of using this medicine for your condition should be discussed with your doctor. This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Continue eating normally unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. In order to effectively treat cystic hydatid disease, albendazole is typically administered in three cycles of 28 days of treatment, followed by a 14-day break. Neurocysticercosis is commonly treated with albendazole, which is typically taken for 8 to 30 days.

Missed dose

To make up for a missed dose, don't take a second one. To continue with your regular dosing schedule, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next one. As soon as you remember, take the missed dose.

Overdose

Call 911 right away if the victim has fallen, experienced a seizure, is having trouble breathing, or cannot be roused. Call the poison control hotline at 1-800-222-1222 in the event of an overdose. Additionally, information can be found online at https://www.poisonhelp.org/help.

Storage

However, you should not flush this medication down the toilet. The best way to get rid of your medication is instead through a medication take-back program. All medications should be kept out of the sight and reach of children, as many containers (such as weekly pill containers and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for small children to open. Store this medication out of children's reach in the tightly closed, original container. If you are unable to participate in a take-back program, visit the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for more details. Keep it at room temperature and out of the bathroom and other places with excessive heat and moisture. For information on take-back programs in your neighborhood, speak with your pharmacist or get in touch with the waste/recycling department of your city. http://www.upandaway.org Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them. Always lock safety caps and place the medication in a safe location - one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach.
